Water Damage in Your Walls? We’re Here to Help.
9/21/2022 (Permalink)
SERVPRO marked the Floor with blue tape, where water had intruded their kitchen.
Water damage can come in many forms, and range in severity from a burst pipe or leaking sink to a flooded basement or extreme hurricane damage. If you’ve been struck by water damage in your walls, it’s best to check for signs and try to confirm the severity and scope of damage to best determine a course of action. Ultimately, larger water damage situations will require the assistance of a professional cleanup and restoration company, like SERVPRO®, but smaller jobs can often be just as time-sensitive and shouldn’t be ignored. Even if you’re not certain your water-damaged walls are severe enough to contact us, it’s best to get a professional opinion in case the damage is worse than you think or may be able to see.
Here are some signs of water-damaged walls to look for as you determine the next steps:
- Mold growth, which can occur in as little as 24 to 48 hours after the initial water damage
- Damp air and musty odors in the surrounding area. Mold can often occur in basements, laundry rooms, or areas near older appliances, like water heaters. It can also grow near fountains, on rooftops, and in underground spaces, like basements, thriving in dimly lit areas with minimal air circulation
- Peeling paint and wallpaper, due to loss of adhesion as water builds up within walls
- Discolored, warped, cracked, bubbling, softened, and/or crumbling walls
- Squishy, wet carpet around the walls you suspect have water damage
- Sudden rise in utility bills
- Rotted wood in or near walls and surrounding area
- White, chalk-like stains on walls, otherwise known as efflorescence
When it comes to deciding whether to call a professional, if you’re ever in doubt, it’s best to contact a cleanup and restoration company like SERVPRO before you attempt to clean up water damage yourself. Even if you have the best intentions, like saving money or thinking the damage is easy to handle, there are several reasons it’s best to get another opinion. First, SERVPRO has the training, expertise, and industry-backed equipment to remove any hazards safely and efficiently as we proceed through the process. Additionally, it’s possible your water-damaged walls could be infiltrated by sewage and contamination, posing a potential health hazard; the associated bacteria could become airborne if not properly remediated, putting the health and safety of yourself, family, and/or employees at risk. Another reason you shouldn’t try to clean up water-damaged walls yourself is that you risk running into mold, which can cause further damage and health effects if not properly remediated with the correct equipment, like our industrial-grade HVAC units and fans.
Furthermore, even if you’re not certain you have water damage, to begin with, it’s still a safe bet to call SERVPRO and let our experienced technicians assess your space and provide a professional recommendation. Hidden water damage could be disastrous if you try to clean it yourself, due to internal structural dangers that may turn out to be beyond the scope of what you’re able to handle. If you opt to clean it yourself, you may find you need a professional only once you’re in a dangerous situation. Ultimately, it’s important further structural damage isn’t caused by improper repairs or inadvertently missing the water source, which must be stopped as soon as safely possible. SERVPRO’s proven system of professionals has decades of experience and is committed to remediating and fully cleaning the water damage, stopping it in its tracks, and helping to prevent further headaches and expenditures down the road.
Even if you routinely inspect your property, water damage can strike without warning, so you should call SERVPRO when you’re ready. There’s always a local SERVPRO nearby that’s available 24/7/365. The average process from inspection to completion is around 3-5 days, but this can vary greatly depending upon the severity and scope of the damage, the amount of contents affected, any demolition that may be required, and the presence of any hazardous materials.
Our franchise professionals have over 50 years of experience, so it’s no wonder SERVPRO is the #1 choice in cleanup and restoration. If you believe you’ve suffered from water damage in your walls or may not be sure and would like another opinion, your local SERVPRO is ready and committed to answering your questions and providing cleanup and restoration experience. With both the local, personalized touch of an individual franchise, we also have teams across the U.S. and Canada prepared to respond to commercial and larger damage disasters. We understand the importance of getting you back to normal as quickly and safely as possible and are committed to helping return your water-damaged walls to preloss condition “Like it never even happened.”®
What to Do After a House Fire
9/21/2022 (Permalink)
Here we can see a room with many items melted, burned, and covered in soot from a house fire in Ventura Calif
Your first priority after a house fire is to make sure all family members (pets included) are safe and accounted for. In some cases, you may need to find temporary housing until it is safe to return to your home.
1. Don’t re-enter your fire-damaged home.
You might think it is safe to return home once the fire is extinguished, but you must wait until the fire department gives you the all-clear. The following are numerous potential hazards in a fire-damaged structure, therefore it is recommended that before entering a fire structure one should wear at least an N-95 safety mask:
- Fumes and particles from smoke and soot
- Mold and water damage
- Structural issues, like a waterlogged ceiling, or a weak floor or ceiling joist system
- Gas leaks
- Electrical hazards in standing water (note: depending on the severity of the fire, the local Fire Department may have pulled the electrical meter and cut off the gas)
If you re-enter a space too early, you may become exposed to any of these items and risk your health and safety.
2. Call your insurance agent.
Most homeowners’ insurance policies cover the cost of a hotel, short-term rental, or food if your home is damaged due to a fire. You’ll also need to begin the claims process to cover home repairs and the replacement of damaged belongings.
3. Reach out to local organizations for extra support.
Suppose you don’t have homeowners' insurance. In that case, other community resources (like programs, charities, or benefits) may be available to assist you after a fire. These additional resources can help fire victims get back on their feet faster. Some of these organizations that can help after a house fire include:
- Salvation Army
- American Red Cross
- Public agencies such as the health department
- Religious organizations
- State or municipal emergency services office
If you’re unsure where to start, connect with your community’s town or city office for guidance.
4. Get an inspection and damage assessment.
Our seven-step fire damage restoration process begins with a call to our emergency service center. The SERVPRO® team will send an inspector to your home to assess the extent of the fire and create an effective remediation plan.
With more than 50 years of experience in cleanup and restoration, SERVPRO® has preferred vendor status with many insurance companies. We’ll manage the homeowners' insurance claims process for a faster, more accessible experience.
SERVPRO Fire Damage Soot
9/16/2022 (Permalink)
A Certified SERVPRO Technician On a ladder cleaning Soot Damage from a Fire in Ventura, Calif
What is soot? (and other common questions)
Let’s get down to the soot basics. In order to both recognize and appropriately remove soot, it’s good to have a foundational knowledge of how it’s caused and what it looks like. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from our clients:
What causes black soot on walls and materials?
Simply put, soot is the tiny particle that comes from incomplete combustion; it’s the black substance that comes from burning wood or other materials. While you might be most familiar with large-scale cinders and residue from fires, have you ever noticed those small black smudges near a burning candle? That’s soot, too! You don’t need to have a fire disaster to see the damage.
What does soot look like?
Most commonly, soot appears as black streaks on surfaces near a fire. It might be easy to confuse soot with mold; the similarities in color and patterns make them similar. Both can come out of nowhere, and both can do a lot of damage! Before touching the damaged area (which can be dangerous), you can make smart assumptions based on the black streak’s location. Ask yourself:
- Is this damage near an electrical outlet or appliance?
- Is this damage near space in my property where I have candles, a fireplace, or other combustible materials?
- Is this damage at the bottom of a door where carpet may be filtering soot from the air?
- Is this damage near a part of the wall that could be affected by the heating system?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, there’s a good chance you’re dealing with soot and not mold. In contrast, mold will grow in areas with excess moisture, such as in between shower tiles or on a bathroom wall.
Can I remove soot?
The simple answer is yes—but that doesn’t mean you should tackle every soot damage project. A small smudge from a candle is likely cleanable with a small cloth dampened in rubbing alcohol. More significant soot damage from a fire should be handled by professionals. Agitating the soot with incorrect substances can make the damage worse.
Is there any way to prevent soot?
Yes! It all comes down to preparation. For large-scale damage, make sure that your home or commercial space has a fire emergency plan and a fully functioning fire sprinkler system. Regular maintenance and upkeep of your fire prevention tools will help reduce damage in an emergency.
For more small-scale prevention, use high-quality candles with short wicks on the candle stand to reduce excess heat. Schedule regular maintenance of your kitchen appliances to help ensure that they’re in good working condition as well.

SERVPRO® has the expertise and equipment to quickly restore your property to pre-water damage condition. We use a scientific approach to water removal and water cleanup that emphasizes monitoring and documenting the drying process from beginning to end.
Every water damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same.
Emergency Contact
When you call, our specialist will guide you through several questions that will help us appropriately respond to your unique water emergency. Beyond understanding your situation, we will want to set up a time for your local SERVPRO professional to inspect the property and create a restoration plan for you. Fast response is critical, so we’ll want to schedule this as soon as possible.
Inspection and Water Damage Assessment
After our professionals arrive at your home, they will thoroughly assess the water damage and help you understand its severity, hazards that may be present, and determine what can be restored. If necessary, we will also assist with stopping the source of the water damage. All of this is a crucial step to creating an effective plan of action that will result in the successful restoration of your property.
Water Removal
Service work normally begins with a thorough extraction of water. This helps prevent the spread of water in the structure and reduces drying time. Typically, hundreds or thousands of gallons of water are removed using powerful pumps and extraction units during the water removal process.
Damaged Material Removal
If any materials cannot be successfully restored, this will be communicated to you. These materials are typically removed as soon as possible to expedite the drying of all restorable materials.
Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Deodorization
Water damage can create cleaning, sanitizing, or deodorization needs for floors, furniture, and other personal belongings. SERVPRO professionals use a variety of specially formulated products, industry-leading equipment, and proven techniques to accomplish this important aspect of restoration.
Drying
After the bulk of the water has been removed, our specialists use industry-leading drying equipment to remove the water you can’t see. This will target water within materials to bring these materials back to their normal moisture level. This equipment is normally placed during the first visit to your property. The type and amount of equipment is based on your unique situation and industry standards.
Monitoring
During the drying process, our specialists will want to visit your property daily to help ensure materials are drying properly, check drying equipment performance, and make changes as needed. This monitoring process is critical to effective and efficient drying of your property.
Repairs and Construction
After these initial steps, your home may need construction work to get your property back to its preloss condition. The repair step can be minor repairs or rebuilding entire areas of your home. We can simplify the restoration process by handling both the initial damage mitigation and rebuilding the affected areas. Having one qualified company for the entire process can save time and keeps costs low.
SERVPRO Fire Damage Process

a SERVPRO employee using special technique to encapsulate lumber damaged by soot and smoke
After the fire trucks leave, your home likely suffers from fire and smoke damage and extensive water damage from firefighting efforts. SERVPRO® has the specialized fire restoration training needed to restore your home to pre-fire condition.
Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.
Step 1: Emergency Contact
The restoration process begins when you give us a call. Our specialist will ask a series of questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us arrive quickly with the appropriate equipment and resources.
Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment
We will carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.
Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service
Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, SERVPRO can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.
Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)
The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We will then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.
Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces
SERVPRO uses specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.
Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing
We will clean all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.
Step 7: Restoration
Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.
SERVPRO Commercial Property Restoration

After removing all office items, all that is left to address now is the wet carpet and walls.
Here at SERVPRO, we are always out for people's and properties' best interests. Owning a Commercial property can be stressful as there are many tasks that need to be addressed.
Things like Fire sprinkler systems, many times one or two may be leaking within the walls and you don't notice it until there is an odor or microbial growth or both!
Your central heating and air conditioning can also leak! The overflow pan can reach its max before spilling over into empty cavities or onto the roof and making its way down each floor if you're in a multi-level facility.
In bathrooms, your wax rings between the floor and toilet can give out causing you category 3 water damage which would require the invasive measure to stop cross contaminates. *Remember any water that leaves a drain line and comes in contact with items or structures that is a porous material will need to be deleted/removed., essentially it is trash.
Exterior flooding is another issue, your property may be below sea level, and as we know water follows the path of least resistance, it also likes dry porous materials, Carpet, and padding, drywall paper behind baseboards, and coves alike. Wood furniture, like office chairs and desks, and wood book shelvings.

Water damage refers to a variety of losses caused by water intruding into a material or system, allowing destructive processes such as rotting of wood, mold growth, bacteria growth, rusting of steel, swelling of composite woods, de-lamination of materials such as plywood, and so on to attack the material or system.
Water spots that gradually ruin a surface may be imperceptibly slow and minor, or it may be sudden and disastrous, such as broken pipes and flooding. Water damage, regardless of how quickly it occurs, is a major cause of property loss.
The costs of water damage and the process of water damage repair may or may not be covered by an insurance policy.
A broken dishwasher hose, a washing machine overflow, a dishwasher leak, damaged/leaking pipes, flood waters, groundwater seepage, building envelope failures (leaking roof, windows, doors, siding, etc.) and clogged toilets are all potential sources of water damage. Plumbing leaks account for 13.7 percent of all water consumed in the home today, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. On average, leaks waste 10,000 gallons of water per year per household in the United States. A pipe crack as small as 1/8-inch can leak up to 250 gallons of water every day!

Ventura: The Difference Between Commercial & Residential Restoration
4/13/2022 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County 805-507-5507
When it comes to residential and commercial water losses, there is a clear difference as far as the size of the structure. However, it goes beyond just the size of the building.
Commercial buildings can typically have multiple units. Apartment complexes or business parks fall under this category. Multiple units means we have multiple tenants or owners. Each tenant will more than likely file a claim with their insurance provider. This can quickly turn into multiple point of contacts that will need to be constantly informed of progress.
Another difference between these types of water losses, are office settings. There are businesses that cannot completely shut down production and we must find ways to keep them operational while dealing with a water disaster. For example we are always mindful of keeping a clear walkway, minimizing noise levels as much as possible and moving quickly so you can get back to normalcy. These factors can be tricky to accommodate when completing mitigation services.
Here at SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County, our team is trained to accommodate the above scenarios. Click here for more information on commercial water damage.

It’s The Hidden Water Damage You Don’t See
11/18/2021 (Permalink)
All these tools help SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County be ready to assess your water damage. 805-507-5507
After a water loss, you may be quick to dismiss the need for mitigation services. You don’t see any physical damage to your drywall or floors. You may not feel that the wall or floor is wet when you touch with your bare hands. As we know in this industry, looks can be deceiving.
Professional Restoration Technicians have the right tools to detect moisture in your home or building. Below are just a few of those tools and how they help identify trapped moisture:
-Moisture Meters: This tool helps measure the moisture level on surfaces. Can detect moisture from .25’’-.75’’ deep. It is non-penetrating and wont damage surfaces.
-Pin Moisture Meter: These have two metal probes that you can physically stick into wood framing in order to get a moisture reading. And electrical current will flow between the two prongs and measures resistance. Since wood does not conduct electricity and water does, we can get an accurate reading based on the resistance measured.
- Thermohygrometers: Measures the relative humidity and temperature of the atmosphere. Many people don’t realize the science behind drying methods. A lot of our atmospheric climate will determine the method of drying used to dry affected materials.
-Thermal Imaging Moisture Meter: Thermal imaging detects subtle temperature differences which can point our technicians in the right direction. Moisture can be very difficult to detect because at times, you may not see physical damages with the naked eye. This allows us to narrow down the field of vision.

Fire Safety This Holiday Season
11/16/2021 (Permalink)
This holiday season, be ready and be safe!
As we inch closer to our Thanksgiving Holiday, we know households in Ventura County are busy perfecting their recipes for the big day. One of the #1 causes of fires, is cooking. So let’s take a moment to review some fire safety tips this season.
#1: If you have a fire in your oven. Immediately turn your oven off and allow the food to cool down before you open and clean. If the fire however has escaped the oven, immediately leave your home and call 911
#2: Always stay in the kitchen with you are grilling, boiling, frying or broiling food
#3: Keep sleeves rolled or wear close fitting clothes while cooking. Prevents cloth from accidentally lighting on fire
#4: Keep flammable items away from the stove that can catch fire. Such as paper towels, rags, oven mitts, or wooden utensils.
#5: Keep appliances plugged directly into a wall outlet. Do not use extension cords.

Follow safety tips to keep your loved ones safe.
Here in Ventura County we don’t get cool weather very often. That is probably why when temperatures dip below 60 degrees, we start pulling out our space heaters. Here are some reminders about heater fire safety to keep you safe this season.
#1: Make sure your heater has an automatic shut off feature.
#2: Make sure your heater has been tested by a recognized testing facility
#3: Make sure you don’t run your heater overnight while you sleep.
#4: Practice the 3ft rule when placing your heater. Keep it away from flammable objects
#5: Make sure your heater is placed on a flat solid surface.

TOP 5 Commercial Water Damages:
- Appliances & Equipment Leaks: This is common in restaurants and catering businesses. When appliance failure occurs, it can cause water damages to you facility. This also applies to HVAC systems and Water Heaters.
- Sprinkler Systems: Older buildings can have outdated sprinkler systems. If these systems have not been updated, they can be found faulty and may be in need of replacement. Sprinkler system malfunction, can ruin inventory and business assets
- Broken pipe or Plumping Issues: Just like in your home, pipes can burst or corrode over time. Pay attention to things like low or high water pressure and have your water meters checked by your maintenance crew periodically
- Sewer Line Backup-All commercial buildings will have bathroom facilities and some with multiple drain lines connected together. When your main line back up, it can cause sewage overflow. Sewage water is a category 3 (black water) contamination and requires sanitization and in all cases any porous materials that came in contact with that water, will need to be removed.
- Roof Penetrations: If the roof on your building has not been serviced or replaced in the last 10 years, it can lead to severe damage to the interior of your building. Sometimes, especially here in California, we don’t get as much rain and so leaks aren’t always apparent. We do get strong wind gusts and so it is important to have your maintenance personnel assess any damages after a significant wind storm.

Water damage a day ago? Week? Month? Is it too late?

A typical water damage timeline looks like the following:
MINUTES AFTER LOSS: Water will absorb into materials such as your drywall, furniture and flooring.
1-2 HOURS AFTER LOSS: You will see swelling and warping of walls, flooring and cabinets.
48 HOURS TO 1 WEEK: Water will continue spreading through crevices if left unattended. You may start to notice mold growth. You may see materials splitting or cracking and deterioration. Note that at this point in time your affected area could have doubled in size from day 1.
OVER 1 WEEK: Mold growth will be present, there could be structural safety concerns. Removal of affected areas would be required.
So is it ever too late for SERVPRO to help? Never! We can help you at any point of your water damage timeline. Just keep in mind that the longer you wait the more work that will need to be done to get you back to life. CALL US 805-507-5507

Water Loss Claims-Tips to Prepare You
9/21/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of NW Ventura County can complete a full inspection report to send to your insurance company. Get the process moving by calling 805-507-5507
As a home or business owner, you deal with many stressful situations. When you have a major water loss and you’re faced with a disruption in your life or business, it can be overwhelming. When this happens you’re going to need to navigate the world of filing an insurance claim.
Here are a few basic tips to get you ready:
Tip 1: Pull up your insurance policy- Review your policy and see what coverages you have. Are repairs included in a sudden water loss? Do you have a deductible? Do you have contents coverage? This will help prepare you for your call with your insurance adjuster. Have some questions ready that you need clarification on. This allows you to set your expectations and have a better understanding once you start speaking with your adjuster
Tip 2: When speaking with your adjuster be brief and go straight to the point. Adjusters need to know the facts so they can make a determination on coverage. Since the guidelines are set, you don’t need to convince your adjuster to cover your claim over the phone. The facts will speak for themselves.
Tip 3: Take Photos- Have your proof on the cause of loss. Take photos and report immediately when the loss occurs.
Tip 4: Water Mitigation Services- Check your policy carefully because some insurance companies require you to mitigate the damages (keep from getting worse). If you need a recommendation, your insurance can provide one. Remember you can use ANY restoration company you prefer.
SERVPRO is a Nationally Trusted Brand. Here at SERVPRO NW Ventura County, we know the process and can get you moving forward. CALL US at 805-507-5507
National Preparedness Month: Guidelines for our Ventura Community
9/21/2021 (Permalink)
Take the steps to be prepared BEFORE the situation arises.
Week 1: Make a Plan: Make it a family affair! Talk to family & friends about what that plan will be in case of an emergency. How will you communicate to each other to make sure everyone is safe?
Week 2: Build a Kit: Gather your supplies in one area that is easily accessible. Don’t forget to think about the kiddos and pets. If you have to stay in a shelter do you have enough snacks and activities for the little ones?
Week 3: Prepare for Disasters: Take a tour of your home. See if there are any potential obstacles in case you need to make a quick exit. Where is your home owner’s insurance policy? Have you reviewed it the last couple years? These checks will save you time in the long run, and they are low-cost, no cost preparedness
Week 4: Teach Youth About Preparedness: Talk to your little ones! It is never to early to be prepared. Review emergency numbers. What do they do if they get separated from you? Do they know your meeting point? Communication and practice are key for when emergencies arise.

How Does SERVPRO Know What I’m Going Through? Because We’ve Been There!
9/20/2021 (Permalink)
Here's the look of our leaking ceiling! Lucky for us, we are surrounded by SERVPRO Heroes!
Just two months ago, our very own SERVPRO of NW Ventura County got their own water damage surprise. Quiet morning like usual, when our office personnel started hearing soft tapping sounds. Before we knew it, water was pouring out of the ceiling! Pipe had burst and there was no stopping the flow of water.
After the initial feeling of panic. Our staff went into SERVPRO HERO MODE!
Here’s what we had to do.
#1: Stop the water source. Main water shut off was our best friend that day.
#2: Placed buckets to capture as much water as possible before it had time to spread throughout the office.
#3: Notified Property Management of the situation so they could make their own assessment on repairing the pipe. Plumber called out for repairs.
#3: Once the water stopped dripping it was SERVPRO assessment time. Our technician, using his moisture meter, marked the moisture path with blue tape. (Gives us a visual on the extent of damage)
#4: Demo: Ceiling that was physically damaged was removed along with wet insulation. Carpet was lifted and carpet padding was removed to allow carpet to reach drying standards. Carpet padding can retain moisture and typically doesn’t dry.
#5: Drying EQ: Air Movers and dehumidifier was placed to start the drying process. As we know too well in this industry, sitting water turns to mold real fast with no air flow.
#6: Day 3 Re-Assessment: By day 3-5 we have a good idea if materials are going to dry in place or not. Lucky for us our drywall and carpet reached its drying goal.
#8: Now that everything is dry, ceiling replaced and all is well
The Water Mitigation in our office took 3 days because we acted quickly. That is why you shouldn’t wait to call us. Don’t ever assume an area is dry by look or touch. When you assume, water will spread and your initial loss area, can double in size. This will elongate your drying time frame and make it more likely you’ll need costly demo and repairs.
So the next time you find yourself in a Water DISASTER, CALL SERVPRO of NW Ventura County 805-507-5507

SERVPRO Has the Ability to Handle Your Commercial Flooding Disaster
9/15/2021 (Permalink)
When your business needs immediate assistance, call SERVPRO of NW Ventura County 805-507-5507
Flooding in business is usually the result of damaged plumbing, a sprinkler system going off, or leak in the roof. Eliminating the effects of Commercial water damage in a hotel or office building can take several days or weeks, depending on the amount of water on the floor and what is in it. Let SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County be the company to help.
This situation is bad enough in a private home but spread the damage across ten floors, and 200 rooms and the restoration costs start to look like the purchase price of a mini-mansion! With more than 25 years experience in the restoration business, SERVPRO knows that replacing carpets is one of the most common, and expensive, costs.
In most cases carpets get soaked, but the water levels are not more than an inch. Our technicians can come in with water extraction wands to draw out the bulk of the water and remove it from the building for each floor of the building.
With water removal accomplished, we begin the process of drying the carpet. This procedure is needed to prevent the fibers from rotting, mold from forming, and to stop deterioration. We use a combination of air movers and dehumidifiers to direct warm, dry air across the carpet surface and force the damp air out of the rooms, down the hallways and into the stairwells where we can vent it outside. Our technicians may prop open the fire exits to assist venting the air if weather permits.
Since commercial grade carpets normally do not have a pad underneath, there is rarely a need to pull them up. However, if they were underwater for more than a day before we arrived, it may be necessary to carefully pull up both an entry and an exit point to force air underneath. It speeds the drying process and is particularly useful if deterioration is a concern.
At SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County, we understand that each day lost to flooding means a loss of thousands of dollars. To help keep your doors open and your guests or tenants happy, we keep a response team on 24-hour notice. If you need our services, call us today at (805) 507-5507 for more information.

- Based on his determination and how severe the fire was, will determine if the structure is deemed safe to enter. Some parts, or all may be tagged with or without restrictions.

Question 2: Cause of the Fire
- Based on the type of fire, there can be different cleaning methods. Having more details on the loss assists our technicians in having the right tools and materials to get started.
- Different types of fire damage include: Wet Smoke (Plastics & Synthetic materials); Dry Smoke (Wood & Paper); Protein (Discoloration, Strong odor); Fuel (Oil & Soot/ Puff Backs)
Question 3: How was it extinguished?
- Was a Fire Extinguisher used or was it put out by Fire Department with water hoses. There are different types of fire extinguishers that people may not realize. For example: Water/Foam/Powder. Secondly if the Fire Department used water to extinguish the flames, your home or building may have water damage apart from the fire damage.
- This helps are technicians be better prepared with water mitigation EQ if necessary.

When Water Damage Strikes!
4/2/2021 (Permalink)
Our Technicians use moisture meters to detect hidden levels of moisture within building materials.
The first 24 hours are crucial in preventing secondary or permanent damage. Within four hours of receiving a loss notification, SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County professionals will be on-site to help. Here are the steps we follow when handling water damages:
INSPECTION – Our technicians will inspect all areas for moisture to get an idea on the extent of water damages. They will then review the inspection with you and provide you with next steps.
EMERGENCY SERVICES – If SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura finds that emergency services are needed, we jump into action and give you a step-by-step overview. Emergency services include extracting standing water, removing baseboards and setting up drying equipment. The quicker we move to contain the area, the faster we can mitigate damages.
MONITORING – To help ensure your home or business dry to appropriate industry standards, a SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura professional will monitor the drying process daily. Progress will be communicated with you.
DEMOLITION-If SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura finds that materials are not showing progress after a reasonable time, we may recommend removing materials. We leave the area clean and ready so you can contact a contractor of your choosing to help with your re-build.
EMERGENCY WATER DAMAGE TIPS:
- Shut off the water source, if you are unable to call a local plumber
- Turn off circuit breakers for areas that are wet to prevent electric shock
- Remove as much excess water as possible. Do NOT use a vacuum to extract water as this can lead to electrocution.
- Place aluminum foil between furniture legs and wet flooring to prevent secondary damages
- Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other sensitive valuables to a dry place
- Do not turn on light fixtures if the ceiling is wet or enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water

Mold In Your Ventura Commercial Property?
3/31/2021 (Permalink)
Commercial Building After Mold Remediation
Mold is all around us!
Add a little water and give it a few days, and before you know it, mold is active and spreading.
We get a lot of calls at SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County concerning mold in commercial buildings. Don’t panic!
We can address your concerns, by finding out:
- Where is the source of moisture?
- What needs to be repaired to stop the spread of moisture and mold in the workplace?
- What are the next steps to get business back and running?
When you can't see visible mold but find that employees are having some health effects in the workplace, we refer you to an Environmental Hygienist for Indoor Air Quality and Mold testing.
SERVPRO can remediate mold, but we do not test for mold.
An Environmental Hygenist is able to give the business owner more information. This typically includes 1.) a full site visual inspection, 2.) collection and testing air and surface samples, and 3.) measuring the moisture levels in the building.
Their findings and recommendations are included in a report, or protocol, which is given to the customer.
- The next step is for the commercial customer to send us the protocol.
- We can then do an assessment at the business site.
- At that point we can give you an estimate, and scope of work, keeping in mind that there may be unknowns.
For more information on our Mold Remediation Process, click here.
SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County is locally owned and operated and available for Emergency Service 24/7. Call us for Mold Remediation at 805-507-5507

Christmas Fire Safety 2020
11/4/2020 (Permalink)
This photos shows how quickly a dry Christmas tree can be engulfed in flames when left near a heat source. Image by nfpa.org
I know it seems early to be talking about Christmas. We haven’t even bought the ingredients for our giant Turkey for Thanksgiving! But Holiday safety is best to be discussed as soon as we start seeing those twinkling lights and tinsel in the stores. Before you start your holiday decoration planning, always remember to check for possible fire hazards.
Here is a quick checklist for things to look for. You can find more information on the Red Cross Website:
- Check all holiday light cords to make sure they are not frayed or broken. Keep strands of lights to no more than three per extension cord.
- Make sure your tree is watered and kept fresh so as not to dry out. For artificial and fresh trees, make sure you keep away from fire hazards. And of course once Christmas is over make sure you dispose of your tree properly and DO NOT leave to dry out in your backyard.
- Keep candles away from decorations and make sure you blow them out before going to bed.
- When cooking on the stovetop, make sure you stay in the kitchen. Kitchen fires are still the leading cause of most house fires.
- When decorating outdoors, use outdoor approved lights and follow the fire hazard prevention labels.
Check out the NFPA for more information on fire safety. Make sure you review the fire safety plan we discussed in our October Blog with your family.
Be Safe this Holiday! And know that SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County is always here for you when you need us 24/7!

Ventura Storm Threats: Flash Floods & Mudslides
10/13/2020 (Permalink)
Flash Floods & Mudslides can occur with little warning. BE READY! -Photo By: Mike Eliason
As we start nearing the close of Fire Season we start to face another threat that we don't always think of until it's upon us. Flash Floods & Mudslides. As our neighbors in Montecito showed us after the terrible 2018 fire season, the devastating mudslide tragedy in Montecito hit too close to home.
It is important to remember as we come out of fire season just how nature reacts to the charred debris and loose soil. A combination of Fire, Strong Winds and Heavy Rains, are the perfect recipe for disaster.
Although in California we don't see as much rain as other parts of the U.S, it is when we least expect it, that emergencies occur.
Take note of your surroundings for excess in debris and large branches. If your home is on the Ventura Hills, does your home have trenches that re-direct heavy water? Do you have reflection walls? Be aware of the warning signs and have an emergency kit ready.
Check out Ready.gov for more information on how to protect your homes against Flash Floods and Mudslides.

WATCH, ADVISORY, WARNING-What Does It All Mean?
10/13/2020 (Permalink)
Be informed and ready! Regardless of the level, you should always be aware of your local weather. Be prepared, Be safe!
We see it on all our local news stations all the time. Wind Advisory, Fire Watch, Heat Warning! What does it all mean?
Here is a quick reference guide to help clear it up:
WATCH: In this case it means there is a chance of a condition happening and usually covers a large geographical area for a substantial amount of time. So in other words, the severe weather hasn't occurred yet but upcoming weather and conditions are setting up to potentially create dangerous conditions.
ADVISORY: Advisory is usually right above a Watch but below the level of a Warning. At this point the expected weather is likely to occur. We see this a lot in our area as Wind Advisories when the Santa Ana Winds are projected.
WARNING: At this point, the projected severe weather, is occurring, or likely to occur and you are being advised to prepare yourself and your home. Heat Warnings, High Wind Warning, Red Flag Warnings are all common warnings in our local area.
Check out the National Weather Service for more details on specific warning types.
Be sure to also sign up to receive alerts so you are prepared!

Water Categories & Why They Are Important To Know
10/8/2020 (Permalink)
When we walk into a water damage situation, it is important to know what water category we are dealing with. It is important to understand the level of contamination so we can determine the right course of action and best equipment to use for the job. Below is a quick overview of Water Categories:
- CATEGORY 1: This category is known as “clean water”. Poses little to no health risk. This water source will come from supply line leaks, faucet water, tub overflows. The problem with Category 1, is it can quickly turn into a Category 2 if left untreated.
- CATEGORY 2: This category has significant contamination microbes are now present. It has made contact with debris, chemicals or made it’s way through materials. This is commonly called “Grey Water”. Sources include, washing machine leak, discharge from a Dishwasher, toilet bowl overflow (not sewage backup) etc.
- CATEGORY 3: This category has substantial contamination. This is commonly referred to as “Black Water”. This water is unsanitary and can cause sickness. Examples include, sewage water, water with pesticides, toxic organic materials.
It is important to determine the source of the leak so we may understand what type of water we are dealing with. Our technicians are trained to handle all categories of water and are here to assist you!

WHY SERVPRO? We are SCIENTISTS!
10/5/2020 (Permalink)
As Leaders in the cleaning industry we are here to help! 805-507-5507
There is a lot of science that goes behind our products and procedures. At SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County, we use that knowledge every day in our daily routine.
The Training is Rigorous
- Initial franchise training
- On-going web-based training
- Stringent IICRC certification
- Hands-on training on the jobsite
- Lead-Safe training
- Subrogation Training
The Science We Use Everyday
Electricity
- Amps and voltage, used to determine the power requirements for a job to avoid shortages and fire risk.
- GFCI’s (Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters) essential when working in a wet environment. Acts as a circuit breaker to shut off electricity in the event of a power surge.
- Power distribution boxes that convert 240-volt circuits into 120-volt circuits. Knowing about this is critical to ensure they have the right amount of power to run the correct equipment to get the job done, without going beyond amp capacities.
Equipment/Engineering
- Type of extraction tools & pumps required for each type of job. All dependent on factors such as suction, lift, fluid-type
- Air-movers: How many and what type for each job. Promotes air circulation for drying
- Dehumidifiers; desiccant or refrigerant and where to place. Works to remove moisture from the air and speed the drying process.
- Air Scrubbers: Assessing whether the environment calls for extraction of air pollutants, odors, or removal of mold spores.
- Type of generator for the job. Is there electric power at the site? Sometimes portable generators are required in order to have enough power for equipment.
Weather
- Measuring the relative humidity, temperature of air masses and understanding Equilibrium Moisture Content in materials.
- Creating negative pressure, in order to control cross contamination.
- Understanding Psychrometry, Condensation, temperature control and humidity control
Chemistry
- Our Cleaning Agents & Products: Determining the right EPA approved chemicals for the job, the correct temperature and ratio. Understanding ingredients of chemical agents and their characteristics of nonionic, anionic, or cationic.
This is just a quick overview of what our technicians are trained to anticipate. Many ask the question “What is the best drying plan when Water Damage occurs?” and the truth is each job will occur in a different environment. At times outside factors can impede the drying process. Because of all these possible factors, there is no straight answer.
Our goal is to get you back to normal. This is why SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County does not charge for initial inspections. CALL US 24/7 at 805-507-5507
Earthquakes & Wind Storms: How Ventura Residents Can Protect Themselves
9/30/2020 (Permalink)
Always Be Prepared For an Earthquake or Wind Storm!
Throughout the United States, different regions deal with different types of disasters. You have the Midwest, who live under threat of Tornadoes. Northern & Eastern States deal with freezing temperatures. In the South, we will hear of Hurricane Warnings from June-October. In our local community of Ventura, we have Earthquakes and High Winds that fuel aggressive Fire Seasons.
When Earthquakes hit, it can cause damage to water and sewer lines. These problems don’t always reveal themselves right away. Before you know it, your home can have water within the walls, ceiling or floor. Gas lines can also become disconnected during an Earthquake and cause a fire. If you notice a sulfur (rotten egg) smell, call the gas company right away. It is important to check your home after you have experienced an earthquake. You can find more information on preparing for an earthquake here.
High Winds come and go throughout the year in our Ventura Community. Make sure you are receiving alerts for your local area. When a High Wind advisory goes out there are a few things you can do. Move all patio furniture indoors. Keep all yard tools and equipment covered or within your shed. Keep debris around your home clear and dispose of large branches. Keep surrounding trees trimmed regularly. Inspect your roof for any loose shingles and repair if needed. When replacing your roof, keep extra shingles for situations like this. Loose or broken tiles can lead to water leaks in your home so it is important to take care of them early.
Always keep SERVPRO in mind when you have Storm Damage. SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County can help you through it! 805-507-5507
Differences Between Commercial & Residential Restoration
9/28/2020 (Permalink)
Regardless if it's Residential or a Commercial property SERVPRO has your back! 805-507-5507
There are many factors that differentiate the restoration process between a commercial building and a residential one. This is apart from the obvious size differences of the two. SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County takes each commercial restoration as an opportunity to solve a challenging situation. In order to successfully complete the restoration process, we have to look at what type of commercial building we are dealing with.
First of all, what constitutes as a commercial building? It can be a large business, a restaurant or an apartment complex with multiple housing units. When dealing with multiple units it is not uncommon to have multiple claims open with multiple insurance companies. You are now dealing with multiple insurance adjusters, different requirements and expectations from those different insurance companies. On top of having the building owner/manager requiring daily updates, you have the individual tenants who also need to stay informed on the process. It can be daunting to say the least but SERVPRO knows proper procedures and can determine the best route of action.
In situations where you are dealing with an office setting, where the office cannot afford to shut down during the restoration process, we have to look at the overall needs of the company and employees. In this case we have to be mindful of noise from our machines and make sure walkways are clear so as not to be a tripping hazard to employees. In this case equipment set up can require a bit of problem solving in which SERVPRO is ready to tackle.
Here at SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County, our teams are experienced in the above scenarios. We take pride in our work ethic and ability to solve problems. In a situation like this where most would call challenging, we view it as an opportunity to show you why you should be confident when working with us.
Don’t forget SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County is here for you when your business or commercial property needs help! Call us 24/7 at 805-507-5507!
Ventura Residents: We Specialize in Flood Cleanup and Restoration!

When a flood like this happens, you may not know where to start! Call SERVPRO to take it from here
Basements can flood at any time. Heavy rains and stormy weather can cause severe water damage to your home and business. Basements are inherently prone to flooding due to them being located at the lowest level of a building. As we all know, water likes to travel downward and seep into lower levels. Although there are several reasons a flooding can occur, water damage has the same characteristics. Here are a few other reasons a Ventura basement can flood:
- A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
- Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
- Foundation drainage failure
- Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure

Flash Flood Warnings: Sudden and severe rainfall. Rivers around us that may typically lay dormant will be flowing with several ft. of water. It is important to watch and avoid driving into high water areas. Some damage that can arise are:
*Water damage to first floors
*Flooded Basement
*Leaky roof
High Wind Advisories: We see these most often starting in October when the Santa Ana winds start blowing. You can see gusts of winds with winds as high as 60 mph.
*Roof Damage
*Tree Uprooted or falling down on home or power lines
*Wildfire Danger-High Winds can fuel wild fires and make them uncontrollable
Excessive Heat Warnings: When temperatures rise to triple digits, you may receive alerts for excessive heat. Mixed in some rain and you have a perfect storm.
*Wildfire Risk
*A/C Leaks are common when we have High Temperatures
*Over use of electrical devices can cause power shortages
National Weather Service will have updates on your area. Be sure to also watch your local weather forecast and sign up for local alerts!

5 Common Causes of FIRE
9/16/2020 (Permalink)
Over the five-year period of 2013–2017 as a whole, cooking was the leading cause of home fires
Source-NFPA.ORG
SERVPRO is here for you when FIRE Damage occurs. Check out our website information for Fire Restoration. Below is a list of the top 5 Common Causes of Fire:
Cooking Fires: Cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires. Usually these fires are caused by unattended cooking and typically involve the kitchen stove. It is important you stay in the kitchen and don’t leave food unattended, especially when you are baking, roasting, frying, boiling etc. Keep flammable items away from the stove such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, aprons or towels. If you have a small grease fire, you can slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. For oven fires, turn the oven off but keep the oven closed. If the fire is too large, GET OUT! Close the door behind you and call 9-1-1!
Electrical Fires: First of all, always have a qualified electrician complete electrical work in your home. Faulty electrical outlets and old appliances can cause electrical fires. It is important that all major appliances are plugged directly into a wall outlet. Don’t use extension cords.
Some things to look out for:
*Circuit breakers are tripping and fuses are blowing out.
*You get a tingling feeling when you touch an appliance.
*Wall outlets look discolored or warm to the touch.
*Sparks from an outlet.
Make sure cords aren’t running under the carpet as they can heat up and cause a fire. There are circuit interrupters that can be installed to shut off electricity when it becomes overloaded.
Heating Equipment: During the winter months, we can expect to see an increased use in space heating equipment. It is important however that you take a few precautions to protect yourself and your family. Always make sure to leave at least three-feet of space from the heating equipment and anything that can catch on fire. Make sure you never leave heaters on overnight while you sleep. Make sure fireplaces and chimneys are cleaned regularly and that a screen is in place to stop ash and sparks from flying into the room. All fuel burning heaters should be vented to release fumes outside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure your CO2 Alarms are working properly.
Candles: We all love a good scented candle filling out homes with wonderful aromas. However, those decorative candles can lead to a fire in your home. Make sure you blow out candles when you leave a room. Avoid putting them near cluttered areas. They should be on a solid surface away from flammable objects. Use flashlights for a power outage. Avoid using candles. And of course keep candles and matches away from children.
Smoking: If you smoke make sure you use fire-safe cigarettes. Smoke outside as most cigarette fires occur indoors. Keep lighters and cigarettes away from the reach of children. Put out cigarettes in a deep sturdy ashtray. E-cigarettes have also been known to catch fire while charging. So do not leave them unattended. NEVER smoke in a home were medical oxygen is being used.
The National Fire Protection Association has great information on keeping you prepared.

White Mold, Green Mold, Black Mold What’s The Difference!?!
9/3/2020 (Permalink)
Here are a few examples of MOLD on different parts of a home. This is what happens when water is left to saturate into walls.
White Mold: Although white mold is not technically a mold type, you may notice mold that looks white and fuzzy. This usually marks mold in its early stages. You may find this mold growing on furniture, attics and wood framing, crawlspaces. Sometimes efflorescence can be confused for white mold. Efflorescence is the salt/mineral residue left behind when water moves through a concrete structure.
Green Mold: Green mold commonly falls under the name Trichoderma. It usually grows on plants and food however you will see it affect cellulose-containing materials. It is a light greenish color and is at times referred to as toxic house mold.
Black Mold: Black mold known as Stachybotrys or toxic black mold commonly grows on drywall and is a common site after water damage. Stachybotrys Chartarum falls under the Black Mold umbrella and can have a mix of Black and greenish tint. Check out the CDC website on information regarding Black Mold and your health.
Trained mold inspectors can determine what type of mold you have. Do not always assume solely based on color. Call us if you need a referral for mold testing. When it comes to removal, we’re here to assist!
SERVPRO takes mold very seriously and in some situations, a cleaning and sanitation of the area is all that is needed. However when mold exceeds 10 sq ft. you are going to want to call SERVPRO for removal. SERVPRO offers FREE Inspections, so if you are not sure and would like to get a professional opinion.

WATER DAMAGE TIMELINE
9/3/2020 (Permalink)
Extracting water, setting up drying equipment and monitoring temperature and humidity are crucial to mitigate water damage.
Within Minutes:
- Water will quickly spread and saturate everything it touches.
- Walls, floors, upholstery and all your belongings will absorb water.
- Photographs, books and other paper materials will swell and start to warp.
- Furniture finishes and carpets may bleed and cause permanent staining.
What should you do?
- Shut off the source of your leak. Turn off water if needed and call a plumber to fix the leak. It may not always be easy to detect where a leak is coming from. Check out our post on common water leaks
- Call SERVPRO to start water extraction and set up drying equipment.
Hours 1-24:
- Drywall will start to swell and breakdown
- A musty odor appears which comes from mold starting to grow
- Furniture will swell and crack
- Metal surfaces will start to tarnish
- Dyes and inks from cloth and paper materials will spread and stain
What happens now?
- If you called SERVPRO early, drying equipment will be set up to stabilize the environment. It is important that we do not allow the moisture to continue to spread. Drying the areas that are not as saturated is important to minimize costly expenses.
48hrs to 1 Week:
- Mold and Mildew start to grow and spread
- Wood Flooring starts to swell and warp, you also may see it cupping.
- Paint will blister and you will notice bubbling.
- Metal will begin to rust and corrode.
- Furniture will show signs of mold and warping
- Serious bio-hazard contamination is possible
What Happens Now?
- When SERVPRO is called out, we monitor moisture levels daily and track the drying progress. Typically, after 3 Days we can have small water spills dried and free of excess moisture saving you money on costly teardown. However materials that are not showing steady progress after 3-5 days, will need to be removed. Mold needs moisture to grow, and the longer the moisture sits, the more opportunity it has to grow. That is why having the proper equipment in place is crucial to do early. Check out EPA for more info on mold in your home.
1 Week or Later:
- After 1 Week, you will see your restoration time has now been dramatically increased. At this point with no prior treatment of the areas, you will be looking at removing and replacing the affected materials. Structural rebuilding can be extensive. Make sure you call SERVPRO early so you can reduce the amount of removal that will need to be done on your home or business.
- Take note that once you have a water leak, that water will continue to move throughout your home if not properly contained. Containing and stabilizing the environment is exactly what our equipment is designed to do. Check out our blog on the Water Drying Process.
Never wait on Water Damage.

5 Common Water Leaks
9/2/2020 (Permalink)
Remember with any significant water spill. Call SERVPRO to make sure there is no hidden moisture left behind! 805-507-5507
Leaks can cause expensive repairs to your business or homes. Below are common water leaks home and business owners can run into. Check out our previous blog if you suspect water damage:
- Clogged Drain: Some clogs are just an inconvenience and can be solved with a plunger. Some clogs however lead to bursting pipes and overflowing. Obstructions in your gutters can lead to serious water damage. HVAC units can clog and overflow drain pans. Make sure you keep your gutters clear of debris and check your HVAC system periodically to make sure it is properly draining.
- Broken Seals or Loose Water Connectors: When you install an appliance in your home, contractors will seal all water connections. If you start noticing condensation or puddles around your appliances, you may have broken a seal. Seals over time wear down and the seal can break. You may notice leaking coming from water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines. Sometimes water connectors can loosen from shifting. For example, a washing machine hose may leak due to the shaking of the unit during its spin cycle. Or as we know in California, you may have an earthquake that can shift or shake your appliance.
- Corroded Pipes: Over the years, your plumbing system will age. With that rust will eat away at your pipes. If you notice warping on your pipes or discoloration, you may want to have a plumber assess it right away. You might want to consider replacing old plumbing systems with a newer system.
- Water Pressure: Who doesn’t enjoy a nice shower massage from the high water pressure? However, sometimes that excessive or uneven water pressure can cause unnecessary strain on your pipes.
- Slab Leaks: Slab leaks occur within your concrete foundation. They happen when a copper water line corrodes and starts to slowly drip within the ground. These are hard to spot and can slowly leak for years without detection. Here are some signs to look out for that could point to slab leak: sudden spikes in your water bill, moisture under carpets, unusually low water pressure, cracks in baseboard or walls, mold problems/mildew, sound of running water when pipes aren’t in use or noticing the water meter is moving when pipes are not being used. Calling a leak detection company to find the leak is important to do early.
Smoke & Soot Facts
9/2/2020 (Permalink)
Here you can see one cleaning procedure SERVPRO uses to clean soot off of ceilings and walls.
Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various surfaces within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a building.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
- Smoke flows around plumbing and electrical systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor within wall cavities.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. Different smoke causes different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises and can even penetrate into attics.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Suspect Water Damage at Your Home or Business?

The following information is valuable to property owners and residents who may be suspecting water damage in the City of Ventura, or any other location. Knowing the signs to watch for and prioritizing taking care of any damage immediately is much more cost effective than ignoring the signs. Early detection of water damage in buildings is much less expensive to repair right when the damage is noticed. DON’T WAIT!!
Water damage can be a huge issue in a person’s home and can often cost thousands of dollars. While sometimes water damage is obvious (such as a leaky faucet, toilet overflow or burst pipe), more often than not, it is quite difficult to locate. With that in mind, here are some common signs of water damage in a home to keep an eye out for:
- An Unpleasant Odor
There are many different potential causes of a bad smell in a home or apartment, but one that most people don’t think of is water damage. However, when water stagnates and is hidden over time, it can be a breeding ground for bacteria, like mold. This will quickly begin to smell and has been described as very “musty or earthy”.
- Mold Growth
In addition to smelling mold and other bacteria growing, people can sometimes see it with their own eyes. Spores in the air can find their way into hidden areas of the structure of the home, and if water and dust are also present there, mold can begin to grow. It will often be fuzzy or discolored, and should look very out of place. However, mold can be tough to see sometimes as it doesn’t always appear in giant patches, and even just a small bit of mold can signify some water damage.
- Changes in the structure
If you want to check for water damage, the structural aspects of the home are the first place to look. Walls, ceilings and floors are places that can give owners huge hints as to whether they have water damage. Look for stains, sagging, drooping, swelling, or cracking among other abnormalities.

How to Protect Your Home or Business In a Flood Zone
4/13/2020 (Permalink)
If your home or business has recently suffered from flood damage, then contact SERVPRO of NW Ventura County 805-507-5507.
Each year homeowners face the possibility of flooding, whether it’s from a heavy rain storm or burst piping. It’s important to stay prepared & to protect your property if you live in or work near a flood zone. Although you can’t completely stop a flood, you can minimize the impact that water has on your property. Below are a few steps you can do to help keep water from invading or destroying your property.
Be Prepared
The best thing you can do if you think you live in a flood zone is to have a plan of action in advance. Here is a list of things to consider:
- Store all important documents in a watertight secure container.
- Have a separate lockbox for jewelry & any other valuables.
- Contact your marketing representative at SERVPRO of NW Ventura County in advance and set up an Emergency Ready Plan for protecting your home & getting a quick service response after a flood.
Use Sandbags & Flood Barriers
Let’s face it, some homes are more susceptible to water damage. Lower flood water, however, can be contained by simply laying out sandbags & setting up flood barriers around your doors. Even if some water manages to get, sandbags & flood barriers can reduce the water damage & can save you thousands of dollars in repairs.
Look at Your Home’s Construction
If you are building a new home or renovating your current one, then invest in components that are waterproof or create a tighter seal around the structure. Some of these include:
- Concrete flooring instead of wooden floorboards
- One-way valves in your plumbing to prevent water backup in the plumbing system
- Waterproof all of your electrical outlets
- Cement render & lime plaster
- Water resistant window & door frames
- Flood skirts around brick homes

Stay positive. Laughter has been found to lower levels of stress hormones, reduce inflammation in the arteries, and increase "good" HDL cholesterol.

Exercise. Every time you are physically active, whether you take a walk or go for a jog, your body releases mood-boosting chemicals called endorphins. Exercising not only helps you destress, it also protects against heart disease by lowering your blood pressure, strengthening your heart muscle, and helping you maintain a healthy weight.
Unplug. It's impossible to escape stress when it follows you everywhere. Cut the cord. Avoid the internet and TV news. Take time each day — even if it's for just 10 or 15 minutes — to escape from the world.
Find ways to destress. Simple things, like a warm bath, listening to music, or spending time on a favorite hobby, can give you a much-needed break from the stressors in your life.

Discovering Sources of Water Damage at your Property
3/11/2020 (Permalink)
To schedule a free water damage inspection today, give us a call at 805-507-5507
If you discover a water leak in your home, the first few minutes are crucial. The main priority is to avoid panic and concentrate on getting the source of the water stopped. The most common water leaks in a home can be traced to the kitchen or a bathroom.
Most all common water supplies in a home have a shut-off valve nearby and all valves can be turned off with a clockwise turn. If the source of the leak is your washing machine, the valves to shut off the flow are located behind the machine. Do not disconnect the hoses. Instead, turn off the water flow where the hoses are connected in the wall.
In the kitchen, you will find shut-off values for the faucet under the sink. This is also where you will most likely find the shut-off valve for an ice maker, if your freezer is equipped with one. The valve that controls your sink is usually the same valve that provides flow to your dishwasher. In a bathroom, cutoff valves are below the sink and may be within a sink cabinet if you have one. The supply line for the toilet is commonly located under and behind the seat.
A water heater can also be the source of your leak. If it is a gas tank, turn off the gas supply first then turn off the water. The water supply valve is usually located near or above the top of the tank.
Stopping the leak at its source as quickly as possible will minimize damage to cabinets, floors, walls and contents. Within a single minute, several gallons of water can flow into your home and saturate anything in its path, including adjacent rooms.
Some leaks can’t be stopped with an inside valve so the water supply to your house has to be shut off. Lines carrying water into your home come from a main line outside that can usually be found close to the street where your water meter is located.
At SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura, we are experts at mitigating water damage. Our expert technicians work quickly and efficiently to extract any water, assess the damages, set up drying equipment and dry your property to its preloss condition.
How to Properly Claim Insurance for Water Damage to your Home
3/11/2020 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura at 805-507-5507, a restoration company you can trust!
Flooding & water damage are not situations that the majority of home owners ever expect to face. However, when it does happen, you will probably be at a loss of how to deal with it, especially when it comes to insurance coverage.
Should the unforeseen happen, the following will help walk you through to file a claim;
Review Your Insurance Coverage- Review all of your insurance documents. Locate the phone number for your insurance company’s claims office. If you can’t find it on any paperwork, then it should be on their website. Before you call, have your policy in front of you for reference.
Be Calm- Make sure you are not emotional when you make the call. You need to be able to talk to the claims adjuster (the insurance representative who will discuss the details with you) in a way that is clear & concise. You will not be able to do that if you are noticeably upset.
Keep Your Details Brief & Straight to the Point- Just give the claims adjuster the facts. Unless they ask for details, keep it as short as possible, giving them only the information they need to understand the situation. There are rules & regulations that govern insurance coverage, so you do not need to try to persuade the adjuster over the telephone.
Have Proof- Pictures of your dishwasher overflowing or flooding around a door are definitely proof that can be used to help make your case. Receipt from a plumber or information from the city or county about the cause of the damage will also be very helpful in getting the claim processed.
Mitigation- If you need to mitigate the damage (stop it from getting worse), the insurance company may make a recommendation for a company. It is ONLY a recommendation, so you can contact another restoration company if you prefer.

Step 5: Removing Mold and Mold infested Materials.
Step 6: Cleaning Contents and Belongings
Step 7: Restoration
Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or on a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Contractor Vs. SERVPRO for Restoration Needs
10/21/2019 (Permalink)
Have your home back in days not weeks. Call SERVPRO 805-507-5507
If you come home from a long weekend or vacation to find water in your home, who can you call to help? Your initial thought may be to call a contractor. Contractors tend to tear things out as a solution. Professional Water Restoration Companies like SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County try to restore, rather than replace, whenever possible.
- A contractor’s job is to replace everything that has been affected. This will often will include flooring, walls, and cabinets.
- Our SERVPRO technicians are certified in water damage drying and cleaning by IICRC industry standards. We do not remove materials unless it is absolutely required.
The average time to dry is 3-4 days and we're done. This prevents further disruption to your life and saves you money. We mitigate water damage and restore it saving your contents and structure whenever possible. Restoring your home is more cost-efficient than replacing materials in your home.

Commercial Property Restoration After a Water Damage in Ventura, CA.
10/18/2019 (Permalink)
Don't let your business suffer after a water loss. Call SERVPRO right away 805-507-5507
Water can cause extensive damage to your business quicker than you would think. There are great benefits to having it removed ASAP.
Mold Can Form In 24-72 Hours After a Flood
The moisture level indoors changes very quickly after a flood or water loss. Water can be absorbed by carpet and drywall. This can increase humidity exponentially. In fact, humidity can accelerate mold growth and cause this fungus to grow as soon as 24 hours after water is present. Having water damage and mold remediation company come right away to perform mitigation and mold cleanup may reduce repair costs and get you back to business.
Warrping of wood floors
Wood building materials warp if mitigation does not take place within at least 48 hours. If water is not mitigated it can increase the water vapor in the air and cause damage to wooden furniture, molding, and flooring. Remove furniture as soon as it is safe to do so and store it in a cool, dry place until affected rooms are repaired and restored.
If flooding in your building was caused by plumbing, the results can be just as bad. For example, if a pipe burst in the break room, the water can affect electrical systems and equipment and cause a short circuit, which increases the risk of fire. Extracting standing water can reduce all of these potential hazards.
If your business suffers from a water loss, call SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County 805-507-5507.

Drying Out Water Damages
10/9/2019 (Permalink)
Leave the dry down to the professionals. Call SERVPRO 805-507-5507
Water damage drying requires attention to four key factors. SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County restoration specialists train to analyze factors, so they know which drying methods and equipment they need to use every time.
Humidity - levels are determined by the amount of water vapor in the air indoors compared to the exterior. 60 percent or higher indicates the air is saturated. This slows evaporation and increases drying time. We use dehumidifiers to reduce humidity levels. Dehumidifiers can lower moisture levels up to 20 percent in 24 hours.
Evaporation - is the process of water converting to vapor. With large amounts of moisture, it is slow. SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County specialists use extraction equipment to remove standing water. We augment the rate of evaporation with dehumidifiers and use exhaust fans to increase air movement, forcing moist air outside.
Air Movement - is increased using air movers to force air throughout affected areas and across surfaces like walls, tables, and countertops to increase the rate of evaporation.
Temperature - is an important factor. Since the preferred range to dry home is 70 to 90 degrees, SERVPRO engages the HVAC system if available. If not, space heaters are used to raise the temperature.
At SERVPRO we use every method available to return every property to a dry, safe condition. If you have water issue in your home, call us at 805-507-5507 to schedule a visit.

WATER CATEGORIES
- Category 1 CLEAN:Water from a clean water source, like a fresh water line for a dishwasher. This water will not cause illness or any ill effects.
- Category 2 GRAY: Water that may cause illness through contact. It may have bacteria in it.
- Category 3 BLACK: Water that is highly contaminated. Contact can cause severe illness or death. Think sewage backup, an overflowing toilet, or storm waters.
Even though water may start out as Category 1, that doesn’t mean it will stay there. Any contamination that the water touches, such as dirty carpet or soil, can change your water damage Category to 2 or even Category 3. Since standing water breeds bacteria, the longer the water is around, the worse the contamination of your property.
More contamination means that SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County's restoration team will have to use more aggressive measures to clean your structure and property, and it might mean that soft furnishings, like your carpet, the carpet pad, or even furniture may have to be discarded for your safety.
Water damage can be dangerous and expensive, so preventing water damage is an important part of home maintenance. But if you know the basics of what to do once it happens, you can prevent it from doing its worst.

Understanding Mold
4/8/2019 (Permalink)
Mold in a crawl space in Venura, CA.
MOLD...
How did it get here?
Mold can grow by digesting and destroying the material the spores are on. Mold spores can be found almost anywhere and can grow on just about any material as long as conditions are right. Mold needs oxygen, a source of moisture, and a boidegradable material to grow on. Molds reproduce by making spores. These spores can become airborne. If airborne spores land on suitable material and conditions are favorable, the mold will begin to grow within 48-72 hours.
Even though mold spores can be found everywhere, they become a problem when they begin to grow indoors. Many building materials such as drywall, ceiling tiles, and wood framing are materials on which molds can and do grow. As molds grow on building materials they may become destructive rapidly. Molds may grow unnoticed for some time. They hide in & above ceilings, behind walls, in attics and basements or in crawl spaces. Molds can cause staining of walls and ceilings and can begin to break down the studs and joists of buildings causing extensive property damage.
Excessive moisture is a key ingredient which causes molds to grow. Sources of excess moisture may be plumbing leaks, leaking appliances, roofs or windows, high humidity, flooding, or condensation inside walls due to poor insulation.
SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County has 24 years of Mold Remediation experience and knows exactly how to help get mold under control.
