The impact of wildfires on air quality and respiratory health

4/19/2024 (Permalink)

As a trusted leader in the restoration and cleaning industry, SERVPRO® is committed to not only restoring homes and businesses but also providing valuable information to our community. Today, we delve into a critical topic that affects us all – the impact of wildfires on air quality and respiratory health.

Wildfires are becoming increasingly prevalent, wreaking havoc on landscapes and communities. Beyond the immediate threat of flames, the long-lasting effects on air quality can significantly impact our respiratory health. Understanding these effects is crucial for safeguarding the well-being of ourselves and our loved ones.

Particulate Matter and Respiratory Distress

When wildfires occur, they release a multitude of pollutants into the air, including particulate matter (PM). These tiny particles, often too small to be seen with the naked eye, can penetrate deep into the lungs, causing respiratory distress. Individuals with pre-existing conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are particularly vulnerable.

Health Risks of Wildfire Smoke

Wildfire smoke is a complex mixture of gases and fine particles, which can include carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and irritant gases. Prolonged exposure to these pollutants can lead to short-term health effects such as eye and throat irritation, coughing, and difficulty breathing. In the long term, it can exacerbate chronic respiratory conditions and increase the risk of heart attacks.

Importance of Indoor Air Quality

During wildfire events, staying indoors may provide some protection from outdoor pollutants. However, it is crucial to maintain indoor air quality. Close windows and doors, use air purifiers with HEPA filters, and avoid activities that can introduce indoor pollutants.

SERVPRO's Expertise in Air Quality Restoration

In the aftermath of a wildfire, the road to recovery involves not only rebuilding but also addressing the lingering effects on indoor air quality. Our skilled technicians at SERVPRO are equipped to assess and mitigate the damage caused by smoke and soot. From HVAC system cleaning to thorough cleaning of affected surfaces, we ensure that your home or business is not only restored aesthetically but also in terms of air quality.

Proactive Measures for Future Protection

As wildfires become a recurring threat, taking proactive measures becomes paramount. Stay informed about air quality conditions in your area, have an emergency plan in place, and invest in air quality monitoring devices to ensure the safety of your indoor environment.

The impact of wildfires on air quality and respiratory health is a matter of growing concern. By staying informed and taking proactive steps, we can minimize the risks associated with wildfire-induced air pollution. At SERVPRO, we are dedicated to not only restoring but also educating our community to create a safer, healthier environment for all.

Unplugging for Safety: The Hazards of Leaving Appliances Plugged In and Unattended

12/5/2023 (Permalink)

In today's world, electrical appliances are an integral part of our daily lives. From coffee makers to computers, we use appliances to make life easier. However, leaving appliances plugged in and unattended can pose significant hazards that can lead to property damage, injuries, and even fatal accidents. In this blog, we will explore the many dangers associated with leaving appliances plugged in and unattended and highlight what you can do to avoid these electrical hazards.

Risk of Electrical Fires

Leaving appliances plugged in and unattended is a common cause of electrical fires. Faulty wiring, overheating, or electrical malfunctions can occur even in seemingly safe appliances, leading to fire outbreaks. In addition, unattended appliances can ignite flammable materials nearby, amplifying the severity of the fire and endangering lives. Therefore, it is crucial to unplug appliances not in use, especially when you are leaving the room or going to bed.

Potential for Electrical Surges

Leaving appliances plugged in without supervision increases the risk of electrical surges. Power surges can occur due to lightning strikes, utility company issues, or faulty wiring. These surges can cause extensive damage to appliances, lead to electrical fires, and even pose risks of electric shock or electrocution. It is essential to invest in surge protectors to protect your appliances or unplug them when not needed to prevent these hazards.

Increased Energy Consumption

Appliances that are left plugged in continue to draw a small amount of energy, even when not in use. This phenomenon, known as "vampire" or "phantom" power, can significantly contribute to energy wastage and increased utility bills over time. As part of energy conservation efforts, it is best to unplug appliances when not in use, not just to reduce energy consumption but also to reduce the risk of electrical hazards.

Accidental Activation and Child Safety

Unattended appliances, such as stoves or ovens, can pose dangers if accidentally activated by children or pets. Turning on an appliance when unattended can lead to burns, fires, or other accidents. It is essential to keep appliances out of reach of children, monitor electrically powered items, and ensure they are switched off and unplugged when not in use.

Wear and Tear on Appliances

Leaving appliances plugged in constantly can lead to accelerated wear and tear, reducing their lifespan. Continuous power supply and exposure to power fluctuations can stress the internal components of appliances, leading to premature breakdowns or malfunctions. Prevent these hazards by unplugging appliances when not needed.

Leaving appliances plugged in and unattended is a danger that is often overlooked. The risks of electrical fires, surges, energy wastage, and accidental activation underline the importance of being mindful of appliances and practicing electrical safety. By adopting simple but crucial habits like unplugging appliances when not in use or investing in surge protectors, we can prevent potential accidents, save energy, and protect both our property and well-being. Let's make it a priority to keep ourselves and our homes safe by being vigilant and responsible when it comes to leaving appliances plugged in and unattended.

What to Do After a House Fire

9/21/2022 (Permalink)

A House Fire in Ventura CA Here we can see a room with many items melted, burned, and covered in soot from a house fire in Ventura Calif

Your first priority after a house fire is to make sure all family members (pets included) are safe and accounted for. In some cases, you may need to find temporary housing until it is safe to return to your home.

1. Don’t re-enter your fire-damaged home.

You might think it is safe to return home once the fire is extinguished, but you must wait until the fire department gives you the all-clear. The following are numerous potential hazards in a fire-damaged structure, therefore it is recommended that before entering a fire structure one should wear at least an N-95 safety mask:

  • Fumes and particles from smoke and soot
  • Mold and water damage
  • Structural issues, like a waterlogged ceiling, or a weak floor or ceiling joist system
  • Gas leaks
  • Electrical hazards in standing water (note: depending on the severity of the fire, the local Fire Department may have pulled the electrical meter and cut off the gas)

If you re-enter a space too early, you may become exposed to any of these items and risk your health and safety.

2. Call your insurance agent.

Most homeowners’ insurance policies cover the cost of a hotel, short-term rental, or food if your home is damaged due to a fire. You’ll also need to begin the claims process to cover home repairs and the replacement of damaged belongings.

3. Reach out to local organizations for extra support.

Suppose you don’t have homeowners' insurance. In that case, other community resources (like programs, charities, or benefits) may be available to assist you after a fire. These additional resources can help fire victims get back on their feet faster. Some of these organizations that can help after a house fire include:

  • Salvation Army
  • American Red Cross
  • Public agencies such as the health department
  • Religious organizations
  • State or municipal emergency services office

If you’re unsure where to start, connect with your community’s town or city office for guidance.

4. Get an inspection and damage assessment.

Our seven-step fire damage restoration process begins with a call to our emergency service center. The SERVPRO® team will send an inspector to your home to assess the extent of the fire and create an effective remediation plan.

With more than 50 years of experience in cleanup and restoration, SERVPRO® has preferred vendor status with many insurance companies. We’ll manage the homeowners' insurance claims process for a faster, more accessible experience.

SERVPRO Fire Damage Soot

9/16/2022 (Permalink)

What is soot? (and other common questions)

Let’s get down to the soot basics. In order to both recognize and appropriately remove soot, it’s good to have a foundational knowledge of how it’s caused and what it looks like. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from our clients:

What causes black soot on walls and materials?

Simply put, soot is the tiny particle that comes from incomplete combustion; it’s the black substance that comes from burning wood or other materials. While you might be most familiar with large-scale cinders and residue from fires, have you ever noticed those small black smudges near a burning candle? That’s soot, too! You don’t need to have a fire disaster to see the damage.

What does soot look like?

Most commonly, soot appears as black streaks on surfaces near a fire. It might be easy to confuse soot with mold; the similarities in color and patterns make them similar. Both can come out of nowhere, and both can do a lot of damage! Before touching the damaged area (which can be dangerous), you can make smart assumptions based on the black streak’s location. Ask yourself:

  • Is this damage near an electrical outlet or appliance?
  • Is this damage near space in my property where I have candles, a fireplace, or other combustible materials?
  • Is this damage at the bottom of a door where carpet may be filtering soot from the air?
  • Is this damage near a part of the wall that could be affected by the heating system?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, there’s a good chance you’re dealing with soot and not mold. In contrast, mold will grow in areas with excess moisture, such as in between shower tiles or on a bathroom wall.

Can I remove soot?

The simple answer is yes—but that doesn’t mean you should tackle every soot damage project. A small smudge from a candle is likely cleanable with a small cloth dampened in rubbing alcohol. More significant soot damage from a fire should be handled by professionals. Agitating the soot with incorrect substances can make the damage worse.

Is there any way to prevent soot?

Yes! It all comes down to preparation. For large-scale damage, make sure that your home or commercial space has a fire emergency plan and a fully functioning fire sprinkler system. Regular maintenance and upkeep of your fire prevention tools will help reduce damage in an emergency.

For more small-scale prevention, use high-quality candles with short wicks on the candle stand to reduce excess heat. Schedule regular maintenance of your kitchen appliances to help ensure that they’re in good working condition as well.

After the fire trucks leave, your home likely suffers from fire and smoke damage and extensive water damage from firefighting efforts. SERVPRO® has the specialized fire restoration training needed to restore your home to pre-fire condition.

Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you give us a call. Our specialist will ask a series of questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us arrive quickly with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We will carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, SERVPRO can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We will then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

SERVPRO uses specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We will clean all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

FIRE DAMAGE-QUESTIONS TO EXPECT

6/1/2021 (Permalink)

Burned home with yellow tape across reading "Fire Line Do Not Cross" SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura is here to help you get your life back. We'll work directly with your insurance company. Don't hesitate to call.

When SERVPRO of NW Ventura County receives a fire loss, we know asking the right questions is beneficial for everyone involved. Knowing the structural integrity, cause of the fire and how it was extinguished allows SERVPRO to act quickly. For more information in our services, click here

Question 1: Has the structure been cleared by the Fire Department?

  • It is important for us to know at what stage the fire investigation is in. While the Fire Marshall is completing their investigation to how the fire started, no persons will be allowed to enter the structure.
  • Based on his determination and how severe the fire was, will determine if the structure is deemed safe to enter. Some parts, or all may be tagged with or without restrictions.
  • Taking these things into consideration will help us determine how quickly we can assess the situation.

Question 2: Cause of the Fire

  • Based on the type of fire, there can be different cleaning methods. Having more details on the loss assists our technicians in having the right tools and materials to get started.
  • Different types of fire damage include: Wet Smoke (Plastics & Synthetic materials); Dry Smoke (Wood & Paper); Protein (Discoloration, Strong odor); Fuel (Oil & Soot/ Puff Backs)

Question 3: How was it extinguished?

  • Was a Fire Extinguisher used or was it put out by Fire Department with water hoses. There are different types of fire extinguishers that people may not realize. For example: Water/Foam/Powder. Secondly if the Fire Department used water to extinguish the flames, your home or building may have water damage apart from the fire damage.
  • This helps are technicians be better prepared with water mitigation EQ if necessary.

At SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura, we have seen it all! Make sure you are in the right hands when handling a Fire Loss.  Call us at 805-507-5507

Christmas Fire Safety 2020

11/4/2020 (Permalink)

A decorated Christmas tree in fire This photos shows how quickly a dry Christmas tree can be engulfed in flames when left near a heat source. Image by nfpa.org

I know it seems early to be talking about Christmas. We haven’t even bought the ingredients for our giant Turkey for Thanksgiving! But Holiday safety is best to be discussed as soon as we start seeing those twinkling lights and tinsel in the stores. Before you start your holiday decoration planning, always remember to check for possible fire hazards.

Here is a quick checklist for things to look for. You can find more information on the Red Cross Website:

  1. Check all holiday light cords to make sure they are not frayed or broken. Keep strands of lights to no more than three per extension cord.
  1. Make sure your tree is watered and kept fresh so as not to dry out. For artificial and fresh trees, make sure you keep away from fire hazards. And of course once Christmas is over make sure you dispose of your tree properly and DO NOT leave to dry out in your backyard.
  1. Keep candles away from decorations and make sure you blow them out before going to bed.
  1. When cooking on the stovetop, make sure you stay in the kitchen. Kitchen fires are still the leading cause of most house fires.
  1. When decorating outdoors, use outdoor approved lights and follow the fire hazard prevention labels.

Check out the NFPA for more information on fire safety. Make sure you review the fire safety plan we discussed in our October Blog with your family.

Be Safe this Holiday! And know that SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County is always here for you when you need us 24/7!

5 Common Causes of FIRE

9/16/2020 (Permalink)

A home on fire with two firefighters fight the blaze from the roof and one firefighter on a ladder Over the five-year period of 2013–2017 as a whole, cooking was the leading cause of home fires Source-NFPA.ORG

SERVPRO is here for you when FIRE Damage occurs. Check out our website information for Fire Restoration. Below is a list of the top 5 Common Causes of Fire:

Cooking Fires: Cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires. Usually these fires are caused by unattended cooking and typically involve the kitchen stove. It is important you stay in the kitchen and don’t leave food unattended, especially when you are baking, roasting, frying, boiling etc. Keep flammable items away from the stove such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, aprons or towels. If you have a small grease fire, you can slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. For oven fires, turn the oven off but keep the oven closed. If the fire is too large, GET OUT! Close the door behind you and call 9-1-1!

Electrical Fires: First of all, always have a qualified electrician complete electrical work in your home. Faulty electrical outlets and old appliances can cause electrical fires. It is important that all major appliances are plugged directly into a wall outlet. Don’t use extension cords.

Some things to look out for:

*Circuit breakers are tripping and fuses are blowing out.

*You get a tingling feeling when you touch an appliance.

*Wall outlets look discolored or warm to the touch.

*Sparks from an outlet.

Make sure cords aren’t running under the carpet as they can heat up and cause a fire. There are circuit interrupters that can be installed to shut off electricity when it becomes overloaded.

Heating Equipment: During the winter months, we can expect to see an increased use in space heating equipment. It is important however that you take a few precautions to protect yourself and your family. Always make sure to leave at least three-feet of space from the heating equipment and anything that can catch on fire. Make sure you never leave heaters on overnight while you sleep. Make sure fireplaces and chimneys are cleaned regularly and that a screen is in place to stop ash and sparks from flying into the room. All fuel burning heaters should be vented to release fumes outside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure your CO2 Alarms are working properly.

Candles: We all love a good scented candle filling out homes with wonderful aromas. However, those decorative candles can lead to a fire in your home. Make sure you blow out candles when you leave a room. Avoid putting them near cluttered areas. They should be on a solid surface away from flammable objects. Use flashlights for a power outage. Avoid using candles. And of course keep candles and matches away from children.

Smoking: If you smoke make sure you use fire-safe cigarettes. Smoke outside as most cigarette fires occur indoors. Keep lighters and cigarettes away from the reach of children. Put out cigarettes in a deep sturdy ashtray. E-cigarettes have also been known to catch fire while charging. So do not leave them unattended. NEVER smoke in a home were medical oxygen is being used.

The National Fire Protection Association has great information on keeping you prepared.

Smoke & Soot Facts

9/2/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various surfaces within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a building.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing and electrical systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor within wall cavities.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. Different smoke causes different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Northwest Ventura County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises and can even penetrate into attics.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
